Steel bands originated in Trinidad in the 1940s, when it was discovered that oil drums could be tuned and used as musical instruments to accompany the masked processions and parades that were a feature of the West Indies' Carnivals.
Today their infectious music is popular all over the world, and the Festival is delighted to bring to Brisbane the six-piece Caribbean Company Steel Band from London. The band members are fresh from the Panorama Steel Band Competition at the Trinidad Carnival.
Be transported to the Caribbean with the rhythmic sounds of old-time calypso and new soca, music by Len "Boogsie" Sharpe and original scores by the group's own Robert Bailey.
